Musculoskeletal disorders are because of mainly Vata Dosha as per Ayurveda. When VATA DOSHA is aggravated, it creates more tightness, stiffness, dryness and pain in the affected areas. The situation then leads to an aggravation in Pitta dosha. .

Kati Basti is a musculoskeletal treatment for disorders including ligaments, nerves (majja), muscle (mamsa) bones (ashti) and vertebrae and Symptoms associated with such disorders are inflammation, pain, stiffness and restricted movements. Kati stands for low back and Basti refers to retaining something inside, in kati basti, the medicated oil are there be absorbed by the tissues.

Process

Patient is made Lay down on abdomen. A ring made with black gram or whole wheat flour dough is kept over the sacral or lumbar region or point of pain. It is packed with paste made of a special flour and water and made it leak proof.

Bala, Balasiddha oil is massaged to strengthen the spine. Chandan Balalaksadi oil is used for massage in muscular weakness & backache associated with pitta dosha involvement. Mahanarayana oil is used to help sooth pain. Nirgundi or Sesame oils are used in which Vatadosha is vitiated.

Warm oil is poured inside the bowl of ring and kept there till it is warm. On cooling the oil it is replaced with same hot oil. After that the area is massaged mildly. The session is followed by local steam over the region. Steaming helps the oil penetrates deep into the muscle tissues, tendons, ligaments and bones of the back region
